Ernest Shackleton died just a few years later in 1922 of a heart attack on South Georgia at the beginning of yet another mission to Antarctica.

Tom Crean retired back to Ireland and opened a pub in his native Kerry which he ran with his wife until his death in 1938. The pub, ‘The South Pole Inn’, still exists today.
